Warning, mindless rambling ahead. Stay sane.

You know when... you finish a game and get all depressed...? And you sit and watch the credits and realize that other than playing it again, there are no other games in existance that could be a sweet as this one?

I'm sure this is some sort of gamer-syndrome... one i have yet to grace with a name. I, however, have been stuck in this condition for the last year and a half. Since I finished Zelda.

I always whine and complain that all games these days are the same. Does the world really need another mmorpg set it the medieval-fantastical-lord of the rings-esque-world? Does the world really need any more war games? And does the world really, REALLY need any more motion-sensing minigames/ sports games? I guess it does. *shrug* Yet as much as I whine about the lack of originality that seems to jet-fuel the industry, I have finaly realized the downside to original games.

They're original.

It's that instant and well known feeling of plainly wanting more, yet due to the game being the one-in-a-million concept that it is, 'more' is presently impossible. Then there's also the pain that rises when the developers realize that there is a need for more, they release it... exclusively to japan.

I recently got a job at a movie store in a neighbouring town. Free game rentals = bonus. So I figure, since I am the most picky person I know as far as it comes to playing games, renting and playing them for free would be worth it. Too bad that selection sucks... (they don't even have okami...)

Yet out of the few I've played, making sure each time that my selections were already famed and loved games, I was still dissapointed. I played Oblivion... and as neat as running around doing whatever you wanted was, healing sucked once you ran out of potions and it has the worse animation I think I've ever seen. And really scetchy combat as well, surely they could think beyond a single slash at mid-air to kill everything. Nor do I beleive that you could jump and slash at the same time... yet dispite these things it was still game of the year?!

I don't play many shooters but Bad Company wasn't too bad in my inexperienced opinion. The rpg style of healing really helped carry me through it, rather than the usual crouch and wait methods. The animation, while still robotic was pretty okay and the dialogue was the icing for me. Gotta love great dialogue.

Anyways, as few games as I play I keep up-to-date on gaming news every day. I keep my eye out for anything that pops out of the usual croud. MMO, fps, failed rpg, and repeat. I vowed to myself a while ago to not waste any money, time or energy on the motion-sensing games, hoping and praying that my lack of support would kick nintendo in the ass, perhaps assisting in freeing it's head.

Yet nothing. All square does is feed wii owners the after shavings of anything (i coudln't last 3 minutes through dragon quest: swords). In essence we (wii) get the crappy rip-off, spin-offs which could probably save themselves some embarrasment if they didn't all insist on using motion control. Guys, just because it's a wii game, doesn't mean you will burn in hell for giving it a semi-regular control scheme. Humbug. Brawl figured that out, look how well it's doing!

By the way... I got this sweet, huge ass soul calibur iv poster from work. Vader AND Yoda on it... doesn't get much better than that. Speaking of soul calibur, I have concluded that it is very aggrivating to play on a playstation... mainly if not souly because of the controller. The analogue needs notches. I could thoroughly explain but the conclusion is, as it always has been: GameCube controllers are the best controllers ever designed and manufactured.

So what I've been bantering on about this entire entry has been about two games... no three. These games were all made in japan. These games have heart and soul, to such an extent that finishing them becomes the equivalent of smashing the console itself to bits. The satisfaction of watching animation, character design, character development, narrative, art and passion take place before your eyes on a three inch by something screen, a small two handed controller or a 4 year old prejection screen that makes you realize that the graphics are actually pretty damn good for a cube game on wii. The humility of crying during the final cut scene, cringing in having to kill your favourite character who happens to be a difficult boss or singing the theme song aloud while you plunge a glowing sword through the evil bastard's chest. April 3rd 2005, November 17th 2006 and March 25th 2008.

Some of you may be able to figure out what games these are... but naming them would drive away from my point. My point that these are the elements... I won't say 'should include' but I'd love to include in games. These three came from developers who respect their products and take the art driven aspects of the project seriously. Other games who try, they can't help but eminate that the developers are trying souly for the fact that it may in demand, and not that they actually believe in it themselves. Unless the last cutscene makes the developers bawl like children, what makes them think anyone else is going to? I want to play games that act as a translation of passion from the few to the many via interactive story telling.

Nope...that wasn't mindless at all. It's true that many...MANY games that are out nowadays are almost all eye candy graphics and no compelling and immersive (or original) storyline.

Have you played Mass Effect? As far as originality goes for a sci-fi RPG, Mass Effect does a pretty good job. And it also has a great immersive storyline.

It can't quite compare to Zelda, but it's definitely worth checking out.
I've only had that feeling after completing a few games -- always the ones that have me bawling at the end. *nods sagely* It's almost like playing another game after finishing such a wonderful one would be... I dunno, defaming the memory of that game. I feel guilty for playing anything right after finishing a fantastic game. *laughs at herself*

If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend Baten Kaitos. The battle system can be a little tough to get used to, but by the end of the game you can play it without more than a glance at the bottom screen. :D (The sequel, although I liked the main character better, never caught my interest as much.)

*rubs eyes in disgust at the mainstream game industry* Indeed very few games are much better than a sharp stick in the eye nowadays. Very few.

I know the exact feeling you are talking about. When I read that you have that feeling when you finish a truly beautiful game I was like, "Yes! Wow! Someone else actually feels like that?!" I wasn't sure if anyone felt that way after finishing a game before. Most of my friends are not gamers, not in the least. So I just thought I was.....I dunno.... strange or something, for feeling so deeply connected to a game.

But I mean there are those games that when you finish them your left feeling as though someone has reached into your chest and ripped out your soul. After finishing Zelda: Ocarina of Time I was depressed for weeks. You just don't feel the same.

Nice reading your thoughts, you should ramble mindlessly more often. Well, maybe you do, and I just don't catch it. :hmm: Either way, you have some good thoughts.

I understand what you're saying. And you know what the sad part is? Some games are very original and have wonderful graphics AND story and Gameplay.
But they still don't sell as well as the games where the graphics are more important or games which are popular mostly by name. (I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy)
Okami for example was/is a beautiful game with many positive reviews, but it still suffered from poor sales, according to Wikipedia. The studio that made it even had to quit.
i swear its soo true. 15 years ago most games were alot more original, and there were alot more games commingout.

i see so many cloned games now, its really annoying.
its hard to find because of these clone games that are being spat out. these clone games are what make it hard to dabble in the unknown games, though i usually tend to risk my money in the unknown games anyway.

the other thing about original games are the fact that when trying something new, its often hard to tell if it will be good or not, if its not, its often made fun of a whole lot, which when yes may be understandable it does annoy me a bit cuz even if they messed up and the game wasnt all that great, at least they went out on a limb and risk it all for a new idea.
Well, you are sooo right.... but that's why I want to become a Game Designer (and Game Artist as well xD)! When I finished my school I promise you, the next games will be better!^^ Hahaha...
Lot of smart trhought there and I agree with you.
It's more graphics than originallity nowdays, but there are some gold in the sandbox if you really look I think.
I havn't played as many of the new popular war games and stuff since I own a Wii and there isn't much of those there.
Just sensor-sensitive sportsgames XD

But I really really want a new Zelda game. A Zelda game for the wii only.
I've heard peple complaining about the graphics for the twilight princess but people seems to forgett that it's a gamecube game ported for the wii.
A zelda game only for the wii would probably look awesome, and the story never dissapoints. Nintendo cares for their franshies XD
But now I'm just rambling, sorry... ^_^;
I love the reactions on E3 when TP was introduced: [link]

It's okay. I know what you mean by the ';post game deprssion' thing.

Sooner or later a game will come along again that will once again leave its mark in history and touch the hearts of gamers.
